Vielha
Situated 2,000 feet above sea level, the town of Vielha is the capital town of the stunning Aran Valley in Catalonia, northern Spain. A fascinating region historically, culturally and politically, Vielha has some breath taking scenery and easy access to the Pyrenees Mountains. Blessed with a mix of Mediterranean and Alpine climates, the summers here are beautiful and warm, but weather can be changeable as in any mountain region. It is also a stylish skiing resort in winter. Originally a Roman town, Vielha developed and since the 12th century has been part of Catalonia, and as such is great for couples and families, and those keen on sport.
When it comes to accommodation in Vielha, there's a wide range, and the number of older and historical buildings, means that an apartment or a hotel in Vielha is likely to be very pretty. Perhaps try a great, traditional, chalet style hotel in the centre of town. They all cater for those either skiing or hiking, and have indoor pools and facilities great for winter holidays and après ski. There are also some great smaller guest house style hotels, which are also set up for winter or summer holidays. Or if an apartment is more your style, there are some set inside lovely old houses or as part of a larger hotel. Or, try a chalet style apartment in the surrounding countryside, with a great view. Or perhaps, if you are on a romantic break, a hideaway apartment in town would be great.
The food from this region is robust, delicious and mainly pork and vegetable based, and suits an active life! Vielha is very pretty and great just to walk around as well as having great places to visit. Of special interest is the 'Church of Sant Pier' which dates from the 11th century. Also, the 'Sant Miquel Church' dates from the 12th century, and is of particular significance because it has some marvellous Gothic and baroque paintings on show. Car hire is also recommended, because a lot of the lovely scenery is unreachable without a car, but the area is also famous for walking and hiking holidays, too.

A charming place
It is a very beautiful town, with a good bar atmosphere. As we are from San Sebastián, we felt very comfortable, we could even order txakoli. As for places to eat or have dinner, there are very good opportunities. Furthermore, the large free parking in Vielha itself is fantastic.

Baqueira and Vielha, a perfect combination
Baqueira is the best ski resort in Spain by far, for the snow, the infrastructures, the location... and Vielha is one of the best places to stay, for its culinary offerings, to have some wine/beer in the afternoon after skiing or for some drinks at night, and it's relatively close to the resort.
