Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the capital city of Gran Canaria and situated on the north-eastern part of this island, the third largest of all the Spanish Canary Islands. It is set in between two lovely stretches of beach coast line, 'Playa De Las Canteras', and 'Playa de las Alcaravaneras', against the stunning hills of this volcanic island. A hotel in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a lovely place to stay for a beach holiday and the city is also a great destination without the beaches. The city was officially founded in 1472, and shortly after, in 1492 Las Palmas was the last place Christopher Columbus stopped at before leaving the Canary Islands to discover America. Because of this historical significance, Las Palmas was made into a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1990. The part of the city that has survived up to present day can be found in the old Vaqueta district and the more recent Triana district which is also home to a lovely park, the 'Parque San Telmo'. Vaqueta is also delightful, with many lovely old colonial style buildings, palm lined avenues, restaurants and cafés. Also boasting great nightlife and shopping, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria really is a destination where beach life meets city buzz.

With such varied attractions, this city also has a wide range of accommodation, and there are some top hotels and luxury apartments on offer in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, as well as a range of budget hotels and holiday apartments to choose from. As the city is old, there are some beautiful, atmospheric old hotels which can't be beat for glamour, but if you want more freedom try an apartment in Las Palmas, perhaps find a lovely old one in a colonial house. The Canary Islands are also well known for building some great modern, stylish apartments and minimalist hotels too, and there are plenty nearer the beach areas and marinas nearby. One of the most glamorous and cosmopolitan places in the Canary Islands, Las Palmas is the jewel in Gran Canaria's crown, such is the variety and sparkle of its attractions
