San Sebastian

San Sebastian is a glamorous light in the Bay of Biscay. Also known as Donostia in Basque, San Sebastian is a city and municipality in the Basque Autonomous Community of Northern Spain. This former fishing port turned holiday haven located 20 kilometres from the border with France, is by nature more Spanish. Though small, San Sebastian is a commercial and tourism hub in the region with beautiful hotels and charming apartment accommodation for visitors to the city. The thriving community is a sparkling destination for its gorgeous beaches, belle époque architecture, dynamic cultural events and superb cuisine. Travellers to San Sebastian have the option of choosing to fly to nearby Biarritz or Bilbao before connecting by bus or taxi for the final leg to San Sebastian.

Come to the old town or Parte Vieja for the best pintxo or tapas bars in town. For shopping visit Centro Romantico, San Sebastian's commercial heart. Looking for somewhere more low key and relaxed? Then Gros is where you want to be for local atmosphere and surfing. Walk the promenade at La Concha beach and immerse yourself in the Art Nouveau architectural features like the stylish street lights, iron lace railings and charming beach front hotels. A boat ride to Isla de Santa Clara is another must do, you can take Motoras de la Isla from the port for the short journey to the middle of the bay.

Hotel and apartment accommodation in San Sebastian is for the most part good quality. San Sebastian is one of Spain's most costly cities, though in the newer part of town some budget hotel and apartment accommodation can be found away from the sea front and Parte Vieja. It is advisable to book your apartment or hotel in advance if you are planning to arrive in summer, as San Sebastian is seasonal and especially busy at this time, in July and August. It is noteworthy that the best hotels and apartments are often booked in advance months ahead. For useful tips about the city, visit the main tourist office at 8 Alameda del Boulevard.
