Benalmadena

Benalmadena is one of the most popular tourist destinations on Spain's Costa del Sol. It enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate which is mild throughout the year, with hot and dry summers. Inland is the original, traditional whitewashed village, but hotels in Benalmadena are located in the coastal resort. An apartment here guarantees sun, sand and sea fun. There is a welcoming sandy beach and excellent water sports facilities.

As a holiday resort on the Costa del Sol, Benalmadena offers a wide range of hotel and apartment accommodation. For example the Hotel Polynesia has three restaurants and is set close to Viborilla and Torreblance beaches. An apartment at the Hotel Balmoral offers sea, mountain and pool views and proximity to the cable car. The Holiday Hydros is perfect for the whole family as it boasts its own water park plus a full service spa, and is situated right by the sea. The THB Torrequebrada Class is located in front of a sandy beach and is also adjacent to a golf course. This plush hotel also has a full service spa, two swimming pools, a cabaret nightclub, a casino and a gourmet dining room. In short, much of your entertainment is right here adjacent to your apartment. The Apartamentos Doramor is a delightful Costa del Sol aparthotel which offers a poolside bar and a nightclub. For the budget conscious traveller to Benalmadena there is the Sol y Miel Hostel, which can offer a rooftop terrace, complimentary WiFi and a bar lounge and coffee shop.

The resort boasts some of the best attractions on the Costa del Sol, including a large marina built in typical Moorish style. The whole family can have fun at the Tivoli Amusement Park, which offers rides and shows, including some spectacular flamenco, and also themed bars and restaurants. The resort's teleferico, or cable car, will transport you to the summit of Calamorro Mountain with its superb views of the Sierra Nevada, Gibraltar and even the coast of far off Morocco! The resort also has two aquariums and a casino. Also worth seeing is the kitsch masterpiece called Colomares Castle with its eclectic mix of architectural styles.

    So much to do

The Benalmádena to Fuengirola ferry is exceptional and suitable for prams and wheelchairs. Spend as little or as much time as you like in each resort before returning. The whole marina at Benalmádena is beautiful and well worth a visit with so much to do there and if you walk along the beachfront towards Torremolinos you'll find much, much more to do and see, especially La Carihuela, which is packed with shops, bars and restaurants. It's also perfectly flat so very easy to stroll around. The cable car from the now abandoned Tivoli World in Benalmádena is breathtaking too. Without binoculars, on a clear day you can see Africa. There are viewing platforms up there along with a restaurant and toilet facilities. There's also a bird of prey show which is very popular. The cable car doesn't go quite to the top although you can walk the 100 metres or so to the top. I did and enjoyed the experience but unless you are fit and sure footed I wouldn't bother. It is hard work and in my opinion the view isn't significantly better than at the viewing platform slightly lower down. So ultimately you won't miss out on much. If you are in Benalmádena later at night and enjoy karaoke, don't look any further than Baraoke in the El Dorado bar at the Doramar Apartments. The mother and daughter who run it are phenomenal and help create a fantastic atmosphere. The drinks too are also very, very reasonably priced. I love it.

The place to be on Costa del sol

Benalmadena and Costa del Sol have a lot to offer so you can go there many times without having to do the same thing twice. It's also connected with Torremolinos so as you walk down one of the beach walks you just seamlessly pass into Torre. We visited the aquarium which was really nice, and visited Paloma Park which had both animals, plants, and a big playground for kids. The marina is also a great place to visit and of course the beaches. For food, I would really recommend La Barraca and La Cala. Both really good places to eat with good service. We are already thinking of coming back.

    Beautiful spot

Have travelled here many times with my family. Only 2.5 hour flight from Dublin. The weather is beautiful with a lovely long boardwalk along the sea front with many bars and restaurants. The marina is our favourite spot with shops bars and beautiful restaurants. Plenty of boat trips and waters ports available too.
