Jerez de la Frontera
Nestled partway between the sea and the mountains in beautiful Andalusia in south-western Spain, Jerez de la Frontera is a delightfully small city with the ambience, friendliness and warmth of a village. The climate is subtropical Mediterranean with warm, dry summers. The city is famed as a centre for the wine industry, and also flamenco and horses. With lovely buildings dating back to Medieval and Renaissance times, there is much culture, art and history to enjoy here. Jerez de la Frontera has many delightful attractions. The Alcazar is a beautifully preserved former Moorish fortress from the 12th century which is now the setting for a picturesque park. The city's 17th century cathedral is built in an exquisite Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassical style. Elsewhere are a number of charming late Medieval churches. A Renaissance era monastery which is now a national monument is also well worth a visit. The Archaeological Museum has some fine Roman and Corinthian artefacts. Finally, no visit to Jerez de la Frontera would be complete without a visit to the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, where you can watch the world famous Andalusian dancing horses perform.
