The Hotel is the result of the reconstruction of an old Franciscan Convent, dating the turn of the XVI Century. During the Past Century served as a Private Residence. Beautiful hotel in a typically Alentejo villa. The staff was very friendly. Complete and quality breakfast. Room decoration and lighting need improvement. There's no restaurant service, only a bar.

The hotel is located in the center of Alter do Chao, a 5-minute walk from the castle. It is a former convent converted into a hotel. The building is beautiful, with many living rooms, a very pleasant pool, etc. The rooms are spacious but urgently need decoration. Currently, they are very dark, with walls painted in yellow stucco and old red-striped curtains; the bed has foot rugs made of looped yarn wool, the color of which is unrecognizable, and the minibar has one bottle of still water and another of sparkling water... that's it. The bathroom is renovated and is spacious. The room amenities, like almost everywhere, have disappeared; they are now replaced by a soap dispenser in the sink and another in the shower. Moving around the hotel is not very easy, it is quite labyrinthine but has its charm. The staff who served us were very kind. And the cafeteria service (hot mixed sandwich and drinks) is excellent, with good and abundant raw materials and very well made. The breakfast buffet is correct, but nothing to highlight. The town of Alter do Chao is, like almost all of the Alentejo (except for large towns like Évora or Elvas), almost a ghost town; at 18:30 there is no one left on the street, the lights are practically off, and everything is closed.

We really liked the Hotel Convento D'Alter do Chão. The staff are friendly and attentive. The room was good (only lacking a socket near the beds). We enjoyed the pool. The breakfast is very tasty and varied. We intend to return soon. The village is pleasant for walking and there are very beautiful places nearby.

Nice hotel, well decorated, in line with the historical past of its building (former Convent). For a 4-star hotel, it could offer better service, such as the breakfast, which, to be honest, we expected more (more variety and quality). The rooms are reasonable in terms of space (double room), but the bathroom could be better (sanitary ware could be renewed and more contemporary, and the shower should also be renewed). Shower water with too much pressure, and very sensitive taps, either too cold or too hot. Bathtub with a very short side glass that does not prevent water from spilling out.
