Salzburg
Nestled in north-central Austria, Salzburg is a small, walkable town that is also one of Europe's great cultural capitals. Most of the city's fame stems from its association with the great composer Mozart, who is commemorated in the town's Mozart Square. A visit to the wonderful Mozart Museum is recommended, but there is more to Salzburg than beautiful music. The town castle is spectacular, as is the ancient monastery of St Peter and the city Cathedral. Away from the beautiful city centre, Salzburg offers 14 golf courses and is one of the world's most cycle-friendly towns, with easy to follow routes out to scenic locations like the superb palace of Hellbrunn. Paragliding and hiking are popular in the nearby Alps, as is skiing in the winter months. For families with children, the Museum of Natural History is a lovely afternoon trip, while the dwarf statues of the Mirabell Gardens always amuse young visitors.
Salzburg is full of lovely lodging places, but with so many available it helps to have a few tips. For a true luxury stay, the Hotel Schloss Monchstein is exceptional, with gorgeous panoramic views from its hilltop locaiton overlooking the city. For those on a tighter budget, the Pension B&B Helmhof is a fine budget hotel in the town centre, while the Yoho International Youth Hostel caters well for backpackers and other solo travellers. And for families, a self-catering apartment can be rented cheaply in a convenient location. There are lovely properties available near the Mirabell Gardens, while campsites also ring the city on the nearby hillsides.
Visitors to Salzburg are spoiled for choice regarding their accommodation. Families can camp or stay in luxury hotels, while backpackers have a wealth of cheaper alternatives. Whether you choose an apartment or a tent, Salzburg offers wonderful attractions for everyone to enjoy. Book a hotel or apartment during the Mozart Festival between July and September, for a cultural feast in one of Europe's most charming cities.
