Milan

Milan is the second largest city in Italy, and an important financial centre. It also boasts a wealth of sites of historical and cultural importance, including many museums, palazzos, galleries and churches. Originally founded by a Celtic tribe, it was later settled by the Romans, who named it Mediolanum, and went on to become a powerful and prosperous trade centre in the Middle Ages. The city is also home to one of the world's largest and most magnificent cathedrals. One of Italy's most important examples of Gothic architecture, Milan Cathedral was begun in the 14th century and took nearly 600 years to complete. Today, the towering edifice is an inspiring sight, with massive stained glass windows, 135 spires and 3,400 statues. The church Santa Maria delle Grazie is home to the world famous painting of The Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci.
